There are some important maintenance issues that need to be performed before storing your generator. Taking the time to do this simple maintenance and preparation can not only ensure it will be ready to go the next time you need it, but can also increase the life and performance of your unit. Here are a few easy steps to take before you store your generator.
Read the Generator’s Owner’s Manual
This sounds simple, but each different model has its specific dimensions, maintenance, and requirements. Checking the owner’s manual for your Honda generator should always be your first start.
Remove the Fuel from The Generator
Any fuel that is left in generator over a long period of time will cause gum deposits to form in the carburetor, fuel tank, and other fuel system parts. The use of Ethanol Fuel increases the chances of rust forming in metal tanks, since the ethanol attracts moisture. Draining the fuel tank and/or syphoning out the remaining gas can prevent these problems, and should be done anytime your generator will not be in use for an extended period of time. Try to remove any fuel residue from the tank by airing it out or by wiping the inside of the tank with a disposable cloth or paper towel. Draining the carburetor bowl is also a good idea. Even if the fuel valve is turned off and the fuel has been removed from the tank, a small amount of fuel remains in the carb bowl, which can cause problems in the future, if not removed. DO NOT remove the carburetor bowl. Use the drain plug/screw, normally mounted at a 45 degree angle on the bowl. After the fuel has been removed from the bowl, try to start the engine to help burn-out any remaining fuel residue. At this point, you should be good to go for the next use. Clean your Generator
Not only will this increase the life and appearance of your generator, but it is also a good opportunity to look for leaks and any other damage. Check the Air Filter and replace as needed. The Air Filter should be replaced every 2 to 3 years, depending on the usage and storage of the unit. Periodic cleaning of the filter, when using the generator, will help the engine perform better, epically under heavy usage.
Change Your Generator’s Oil
Changing the engine oil according to the manufacturers schedule is critical to the life of the engine/generator. Failure to change the oil will lead to major engine damage and a costly repair or replacement of the engine or the complete generator. If you change the oil just after shutting the engine down after an extended run time, the oil will be very hot. You should have a container at least twice the size of the oil capacity of the engine. Usually 2 quarts or larger, depending on the size of the engine/generator. Refill with the oil recommended in your owner’s manual.
Spare Parts for Your Generator
It’s always a good idea to have spare parts on hand. Spark plug, Air Filter, Engine Oil, Fuel Filter, etc. Any items that are needed to start the engine and keep it running should be considered.
